| Thanksgiving anticipation's got me feeling peckish |
Time is a funny thing - typically I'm late with November's playlist due to Halloween activities. This year I actually pulled it together (after a busy summer kept me from doing a September playlist)! I think routines are an illusion: you can tell yourself they exist and that you have your life under control, but there's no telling when the poo is gonna hit the propeller!
Anyway, enough with the philosophy and on with the music! A couple of these aren't on Spotify, which is why I always encourage people to BUY THEIR MUSIC! You can't trust corporations and capitalism to make your favorite tunes available. The others include returning favorites, two from the excellent "Carrie" soundtrack, and the usual new picks. With last month's festivities emphasizing dance and pop, November's playlist is a kinder, gentler mix of folk, rock and country. Hope you enjoy! To listen on Spotify, click HERE.
1. Does It Ever Cross Your Mind? (Brandon Flowers) - With this latest album, Brandon Flowers leans into the Americana and country vibes and proves he's VERY good at it. I'll happily take this over some of the hyperpatriotic country music out there.
2. Run Out of Road (Orville Peck) - Another country music star I've enjoyed over the years!
3. When a Good Man Cries (CMAT) - This is from last year, but she appeared on the Daily Show recently and I remembered how much I love her!
4. 19th Nervous Breakdown (Elizabeth Cook) - Unexpected (and welcome!) country cover of the Rolling Stones classic.
5. Spectral Eyes (Blondie) - Speaking of classics - who knew Blondie was working on a new album?! Debbie Harry's voice has changed, but the appeal is still there! Viva Blondie!
6. Bottle (Remi Wolf) - A frequent Brantworld listee returns with more engaging new music. Hopefully she'll tour next year! I was supposed to catch her in Asheville in 2024 but Hurricane Helene had other plans for this NC mountain town.
7. Anti-Superstar (Haute & Freddy) - The first of our "Carrie"-featured tunes! It never takes much arm-twisting to get me to include these guys on a playlist!
8. Ain't in L.A. (Adéla) - I found this because Conan Gray covered it! Love both versions.
9. I Owe You (Claud) - YAAAAAYYYYY!!!! New Claud! It was tough to pick one song for November. More coming next month!
10. Indescribable (JHart) - Eric turned me on to this. Great R&B slow jam like grandma used to make (or at least listen to on her cassette player)!
11. Juicy (Victoria Monét) - Thanksgiving is truly a bounty - another favorite artist drops a new album!
12. What a Shame (Hollyy) - Our 2nd "Carrie" soundtrack selection! Thanks, Gary, for sending it to me.
13. Southern Celebration (Genya Ravan) - Holidays are about celebrations & traditions, so here's some classic rock for ya from a very much underrated performer! Not on Spotify, but you can find it on her 2nd solo album.
14. Long Goodbye (Kat Eaton) - UK singer/songwriter serves up some powerhouse blues!
15. Maggie (Cassandra Coleman) - 70s style folk-rock from Indie singer.
16. I Wish I Wanted To (Billy Strings) - Some of my fraternity brothers follow this guy like they used to follow the Grateful Dead, and it's easy to see why! This is off the Grammy-winner's latest album.
17. Count the Ways (The Last Dinner Party) - I just caught these ladies in concert while they toured with sombr, and they were fantastic! Here's a selection from their latest album.
18. You've Got My Number (Spiritual Cramp feat. Sharon Van Etten) - West Coast punk band has some reggae vibes here, and Sharon Van Etten meshes beautifully with lead singer Michael Bingham.
19. That'll Be the Day (Marshall Crenshaw) - "Someday, Someway" and "Cynical Girl" are evergreen in Brantworld, so I was curious to hear this latest release of bootlegs and rarities. I especially gravitated towards this Buddy Holly cover. Clearly Holly was an influence on Crenshaw!
20. Into Brooklyn, Early in the Morning (the Innocence Mission) - Periodically I pull old CDs out of the cabinet and give them a re-listen. This was on an old Paste Magazine sampler and I fell in love with it. Very Velvet Underground.
21. Whisper Not (the Florentines) - I was in London during September and picked up an excellent box set of 1980s jazz-influenced pop. All the usuals were there: Style Council, Sting, Everything But the Girl. This particular song was new to me, but as an Anita O'Day fan I was thrilled to see the song get a reboot! Not on Spotify, unfortunately, but worth tracking down.
22. Ever Since the One I Love's Been Gone (Cécile McLorin Salvant) - Cécile can take you on a journey with her voice! This time, she's got Metropole Orkest and Jules Buckley backing her up. The lush strings and orchestration make you feel like you're in the audience at a vintage Broadway production. Absolutely stunning.
So that's November's playlist! Hope everyone has a great month and hopefully I'll see you in December!
