Brant's September 2016 Playlist

I could totally rock this look for my birthday

The beginning of September is always crazy for me, with Labor Day and my birthday coming back-to-back, so I wanted to go ahead and get this month's playlist posted.  Last month had a predominantly blues/rock feel, so this month I highlighted more electronic and dance tunes.  Hope you enjoy!  To listen on Spotify, click HERE.

1.  Telepathy (Christina Aguilera feat. Nile Rodgers) - Nile Rodgers has said that one of his biggest regrets is that he never got to work with Donna Summer.  I think he and Xtina managed to conjure the Queen of Disco in this delicious number from the "Get Down" soundtrack!  Hopefully Spotify will have this soon.  You can catch it here.

2.  Colours (Roosevelt) - The mirror ball keeps spinning with this groovy selection from German singer/songwriter/producer!

3.  Halcyon Birds (Broken Back) - So it turns out, the guy from Broken Back really had a broken back!  He seems to have recovered, but used his period of incapacitation to make music.  This lighthearted electro-folk tune is from his first EP - aptly titled "Dear Misfortune, Mother of Joy".

4.  Lost on You (LP) - Songwriter Laura Pergolizzi, who has written for Cher, Rihanna, and Xtina and been featured on "Orange Is the New Black",  recorded this under her stage name (LP).   I thought it might be Gwen Stefani when I heard it.

5.  It Was Always So Easy to Find an Unhappy Woman (Moe Bandy) - I put Peter Wolf's cover of this tune on last month's playlist, but after hearing the original I HAD to include it this month!  Classic country at its best.

6.  Drive (Myzica feat. Ezra Carey) - Speaking of covers, my friend Gary turned me on to this nicely done cover of the Cars' 1984 ballad.

7.  Lake Arrowhead (Nora En Pure) - Whatever happened to instrumentals???  They were never super popular but they were around:  fun tracks like "Axel F" by Harold Faltermeyer and "The Hustle" by Van McCoy.  I say it's time to bring instrumentals back, and this tune is my recommendation for the cause. Breezy, beautiful piano-driven tune from Swiss artist.

8.  Land Ho! (Lovebugs) - More good stuff from Switzerland!  Upbeat, nautical themed alt-pop to launch your party!

9.  Vaporize (Amos Lee) - Bluesy folk from former schoolteacher!

10.  The Falls (Whitney) - Illinois band is serving early-70s Seals and Crofts/Chicago vibes, and I'm absolutely digging it!

11.  Heaven (Lydia Loveless) - The latest from Columbus, OH artist reminds me of Maria McKee's old band, Lone Justice.  Great indie country!

12.  My Toy (Breakbot) - Their song "Baby I'm Yours" (which Bruno Mars has been accused of plagiarizing for his hit "Treasure") is one of my all-time faves.  Now the French act is back with more delicious disco!

13.  Guilty (Lady Wray) - Some old-school soul from Virginia-born singer/songwriter.

14.  Would You Love Me (Raging Fyah) - I've been renewing my taste in reggae lately, and this Jamaican band is one I've been enjoying during these last days of summer.

15.  Brother, What Happened?  (Muddy Magnolias) - Toe tappin' rock from Nashville duo.

16.  Never Enough (the Hunna) - Indie band from England brings the intensity on this selection from their debut album.

17.  80s Mercedes (Maren Morris) - Singalong country from Nashville chanteuse.  I wonder if this is the same 80s Mercedes that Pebbles was singing about?

18.  Higher (Carly Rae Jepsen) - I'm terrified CRJ will be remembered as a one-hit wonder for "Call Me Maybe", which is a real shame because she's been consistently putting out some great music!  This is from her newest B-Side album, and it's still better than a lot of A-sides by other artists that are getting airplay.  I'll be civil and not name names, but let's see some #JusticeForCarly  

So that's September!  I've got a birthday and 3-day weekend to prepare for, so just gonna say "Ciao" and I'll see ya next month!  

Brant's August 2016 Playlist

This is the closest I've come to Tweeting in months (and he lets me use more than 140 characters)!

Another month, another playlist.  I don't think there's a real theme to this month's list - maybe Repeat Offenders?  I think most of the artists on this month's list have made appearances on previous playlists throughout the years (and we also have quite a few covers).  But good music is good music, and it's nice that these artists have kept the quality tunes comin'.  To listen on Spotify, click HERE.

1.  Go! (M83 feat. Mai Lan) - Cinematic electronica with a rock edge, from French band.

2.  Thinking of U (Abra) - Angelic vocals lead us into a slinky R&B jam with a slightly Asian vibe.  It kinda reminds me of "Sukiyaki" by Taste of Honey.   Wonder if she knows there is a Pokémon with the same name?

3.  Trouble (Cage the Elephant) - The latest from this American rock group is produced by the Black Keys' Dan Auerbach (as if you couldn't tell - his stamp is ALL over this).

4.  Cod'ine (Janis Joplin) - I just discovered this tune!!!  It's from a 1965 audition tape Janis made when she was trying out for Big Brother and the Holding Company.  Janis' take on a Buffy Sainte Marie tune.

5.  Midnight Rider (Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings) - Another great cover by another great lady!  Sharon tackles the Allmans, and infuses them with a heavy dose of Memphis soul.

6.  Don't You Know (Kungs feat. Jamie N Commons) - Very much in the spirit of Avicii's "Wake Me Up", French producer Kungs teams up with British singer Jamie N Commons for some bluesy dance fusion.

7.  Operator /DJ Koze's Disco Edit/ (Lapsley) - German DJ adds more cowbell to Lapsley's melancholy vocals and Manhattan Transfer samples, and the results are simply magnificent.

 8.  Don't You Give Up on Me (Lissie) - Toe-tappin' pop that is slightly reminiscent of Paula Cole during her prime.

9.  Dreaming (Imelda May) - Why don't more artists use ukuleles?   A delightful cover of Blondie's hit.

10.  Brazil /Aquarela Do Brasil/ (Leslie Odom Jr) - "Hamilton" guy and Tony Award winner takes us from colonial US to the faraway shores of Brazil!

11.  It Was Always So Easy to Find an Unhappy Woman (Peter Wolf) - Former J. Geils lead singer indulges his country side with this cover of Moe Bandy's 1975 classic.

12.  Love Is a Burden (Jamestown Revival) - Bluesy rock from Texas duo.

13. Give Me Your Love (Sigala feat. Nile Rodgers and John Newman) - I think I've had each of these guys on various playlists, so what a treat to find them collaborating on this delicious booty-shaker!

14.  Intention (Kiiara) - Icy vocals over trippy electronic beats.

15.  Red Flag (The Moth and the Flame) - Percussion heavy New Wave tune from West Coast band.

16.  Who's Gonna Take the Garbage Out (John Prine and Iris DeMent) - The duo who gave us the classic "In Spite of Ourselves" returns and it appears the honeymoon is over!

17.  More and More (Fleur East) - Peppy pop from the UK that leans heavily on an 80's R&B vibe.  Not on Spotify, unfortunately, but you can hear it on YouTube.

Brant's July 2016 Playlist

How is it July already???  People are making Independence Day plans and I haven't even broken in my new jorts.  At least this month's playlist is ready for liftoff.  We've got several artists that have appeared on previous playlists, and lots of folk-rock and mid-tempo tunes to go with the summer breezes.  Enjoy.  To listen on Spotify, click HERE.

1.  East Coast Girl (Butch Walker) - Rock veteran channels Bruce Springsteen in his latest offering.

2.  Mama, I Don't Believe (the Avett Brothers) - Carolina band may have trouble believing, but they certainly have no trouble putting together a great song.

3.  Do I Ever Cross Your Mind (Trio - Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt) - First release from the upcoming 'Trio' box set, which will include both Trio albums and 20 previously unreleased songs (like this one!).   Divine.  Talk about your Holy Trinity!!!

4.  I Need You Tonight (James Morrison) - Motown-flavored soul from across the pond.

5.  Middle (DJ Snake feat. Bipolar Sunshine) - I NEVER would have guessed that this laid-back EDM tune was by the "Turn Down for What" guy!  Live and learn.

6.  Get Up (R3hab and Ciara) - Dutch DJ teams up with American singer for some feel good club beats.

7.  Another Go (Drowners) - Jangly guitars and melancholy vocals that are vaguely reminiscent of 80s alt rock.

8.  Stone Cold (Demi Lovato) - Another musical surprise for my ears!  I was sure this was Joss Stone when I first heard it on the radio.  Powerful blues performance from former child star and current activist.

9.  Make Up My Mind (First Com) - Okay, maybe "Music I Thought Was Someone Else" should have been the theme for this month's playlist.  This song closed out the Season Two finale of 'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt' and I would have bet the farm that it was Patsy Cline.  Wrong again.  But it was created to sound like Patsy.  Best I can tell, this is a song produced by a group that does soundtracks for TV and movies.  Not available on Spotify, but you can hear it HERE.

10.  pink skies (LANY) - Warm and soothing electronica with dreamy vocals.

11.  I Want You (After 7) - Vintage R&B act returns with this tasty slow jam!

12.  Taste the Feeling (Avicii feat. Conrad Sewell) - We've had both Avicii and Conrad Sewell on previous playlists, so what a treat to see them team up to do a track together!

13.  Wish I Knew You (the Revivalists) - 70s influenced blues-rock from New Orleans band.

14.  Someday (Colvin and Earle) - Jill turned me on to this!  I'd forgotten about Shawn Colvin until I saw this posted on Facebook.  Colvin had covered this Steve Earle song on her 1994 album Cover Girl, so it only makes sense that on this collaboration album they would perform the song as a duet!

15.  Heaven (Nouvelle Vague) - Another cover song by an artist I'd forgotten.  French band Nouvelle Vague was one of my fave projects when they first started doing bossa nova versions of New Wave songs back in 2004!  They slipped off my radar until I saw this while browsing online - a great Psychedelic Furs tune remade a la Nouvelle Vague.  Look for a Nouvelle Vague anniversary album to come out this year!

16.  Alright (Pony Pony Run Run) - More danceable delights from France, although this tune is arguably more disco than bossa nova!
 
17.  Back in the USA (Linda Ronstadt) - I always like to include a patriotic song for July's playlists, and since we already had Linda Ronstadt on board for the Trio song (#3) it seemed fitting to choose her version of Chuck Berry's "Back in the USA".  The album photo of her on roller skates wearing her satin jacket and short-shorts is probably one of my favorite pics of all time.  #Classic

Brant's June 2016 Playlist

It's June - which means that summer is about to be in full swing!  For me, that means lots of concerts and driving around with the windows down (d@mn, I miss my old convertible!).  So with those two things in mind,  I've put together this month's playlist!  It's chock full of bands I've already seen, would like to see, or can at least enjoy by playing as loudly as possible on the ol' car stereo.  Hope you like.  To listen on Spotify, click HERE.

1.  Gone Are the Days (HONNE) - British Electronic-Soul band get us started with this upbeat ditty, as warm as a summer breeze and slightly reminiscent of Bruce Hornsby.

2.  Life Itself (Glass Animals) - I saw this a few times on social media, so had to check it out for myself.  Kinda tribal, kinda funky, lotsa fun!

3.  Need Somebody (Sizzy Rocket) - Young pop star has already collaborated with Scissor Sisters' Babydaddy and seems destined for great things!

4.  Say You Do (Sigala featuring Imani and DJ Fresh) - Percussion-heavy tune just feels like summer to me.  Must be the steel drums!

5.  A Million Miles Away (Beach Slang) - I love when a new band pays tribute to a song I used to love but had somehow slipped off my radar!  This cover of the Plimsouls' classic is perfect for blasting on the car stereo...or on your home stereo...or just turn the volume up on your earbuds!  Whichever way, play it loud!

6.   White Flag (Joseph) - Trio of sisters from Portland combine their considerable pipes to yield some powerful and angelic harmonies.

7.  Weekend's Long (Ziggy Marley) - It wouldn't be a summer playlist without some reggae!  Luckily Bob and Rita's son (nicknamed for the Bowie character!) just put out a new album.

8.  The Eye (Brandi Carlile) - I just saw her live for the first time over the weekend!  If you haven't seen her, I HIGHLY recommend it.  This song especially blew me away - harmonies so tight, I haven't heard the like since seeing Crosby, Stills, and Nash back in the 80s.

9.  Best Love (Yuna) - We had her on my May 2014 playlist, and now she's back with some smooth, jazzy soul!  Perfect for a Sunday morning.

10.  Make Me Like You (Gwen Stefani) - Gwen is back and she's as catchy as ever!  Too much fun not to include.

11.  Fiction (Kygo feat. Tom Odell) - I put his remix of Benjamin Francis Leftwich's "Shine" on last month's list, so was super curious when I saw Kygo had released an entire album of material.  This Norwegian DJ is definitely someone I'll be keeping an eye on!

12.  To the Road (Matrimony) - Another band I've seen recently!  Love their Buckingham/Nicks vibe.  This is from 2014, and the band has been on hiatus - but here's hoping they can get together for some new tunes!

13.    River (Bishop Briggs) - Fiery performance from artist formerly known as Bishop (which got her into legal trouble with a band going by the same name).  Legal troubles don't seem to have softened her edge!

14.  I Am a Nightmare (Brand New) - I have a couple of people whose pages I turn to when I need to find new material for playlists.  This one is from my friend Holden, whom I do not know well but I do know that he has great taste in music!  Adrenaline-charged alt rock from NYC band.  Thanks, Holden!

15.  What Is Love (Kristin Kontrol) - The Dum Dum Girls were more of a garage-rock band, so this dreamy 80s style ballad feels like a change of style for singer Dee Dee - but still a great tune!

16.  Kiss Me Goodbye (ABC) - Sometimes a change of style can be nice, but sometimes doing what you do best is the way to go!  34 years after the release of their seminal album "The Lexicon of Love", ABC is back with the sequel.  Filled with lush instrumentation and Martin Fry's sophisticated vocals - it feels like no time has passed at all!  Kiss them hello.

17.  Go the Distance (White Buffalo) - Singer/songwriter Jake Smith closes us out with this humorous take on no-frills love!  The comedy and folk stylings remind me of vintage John Prine.

Brant's May 2016 Playlist

I compile these playlists every month as a way to (hopefully) introduce people to music they may not have otherwise heard.  It seems like mainstream radio is so geared towards what's popular that I can't even imagine how a new artist breaks through.  Sometimes, however, I wonder if maybe I'm discriminating against the popular acts.  Lord knows Beyonce and Coldplay don't need my help to sell records - but both of them have put out new stuff that I really enjoy.  So, this month I bucked the trend a little and put them on the list.  I still hope there might be other songs on here that you haven't heard.

Also - a lot of these aren't on Spotify, so apologies for that.  In these instances - I'll try to refer you to somewhere that you can hear the song.  To listen to what IS available on Spotify, click HERE.

1.  Devil In Me (Anderson East) - Alabama native and Miranda Lambert's boyfriend starts us out with a Van Morrison-esque blues tune.

2.  Everglow (Coldplay) - Gorgeous piano-driven ballad by the massively popular band.  I think what charmed me was the song's simplicity, which is refreshing as the band has moved towards a larger and more expansive sound.

3.  Shine /Kygo Remix/ (Benjamin Francis Leftwich) - It's also refreshing when a remix doesn't necessarily translate into a dance-floor anthem.  Kygo's skillful remix here simply percolates behind Leftwich's lullaby, giving it a Paul Simon "Graceland" feel.  Mitch turned me on to this one.

4.  Barbaric (Petite Meller) - We had her on last October's playlist, and now she's back with another peppy pop tune from across the pond!

5.  Sweet Girl (B1A4) - Apparently my love of boy bands transcends the language barrier.  I heard these guys while dining at my fave Korean restaurant and immediately had to have one of their tunes.  Not on Spotify, but you can catch the video here.

6.  Fast Car (Jonas Blue feat. Dakota) - When one thinks about great dance songs, they probably don't think Tracy Chapman - but hey!  It works, probably with a lot of credit going to Dakota's world weary vocals.

7.  I'm Not Okay (Jill Andrews) - Trent Dabbs' version is on my September 2013 playlist, but Jill Andrews performs it on her new album!  Easy going resignation with a side of protest.

8.  They Don't Know (Lydia Loveless) - Straightforward interpretation of the Kirsty MacColl song made famous by Tracey Ullman in 1983.

9.  Don't Hurt Yourself (Beyonce feat. Jack White) - Pretty much the polar opposite of "They Don't Know".  Blind faith in romance gets an ice cold slap in the face when confronted with undeniable evidence of betrayal.  Bey is back and she is p*ssed off.  Fantastic collaboration with Jack White from her artistic triumph of an album "Lemonade".  Also not on Spotify, but you can hear it here.

10.  Where the Light Gets In (Primal Scream feat. Sky Ferreira) - Fantastic New Wave throwback that would make New Order proud!

11.  America's Sweetheart (Elle King) - I just caught her concert last month, and this lady is the real deal.  Powerful, alt-country jam from young rocker.  And how did I not know that she was Rob Schneider's daughter???

12.  Mama Tried (Merle Haggard) - The first "In Memoriam" song for this month.  RIP to a country legend.

13.  Honey Pie (Jonathan Tyler) - Great 70s vibe that sounds like a hybrid of T. Rex and Stealers Wheel.

14.  Things That I Lean On (Wynonna and the Big Noise with Jason Isbell) - Two great talents on one great song.  Much like the Coldplay tune earlier - no frills are needed.

15.  Color (Finish Ticket) - Feel-good alt-rock tune from CA band.

16.  Collect My Love (the Knocks feat. Alex Newell) - Peppy NYC disco featuring openly gay and gender-fluid (he doesn't consider himself trans) singer Alex Newell.

17.  International Lover (Prince) - Le sigh.  Prince's death hit me really hard, and I'm still reeling.  There is no possible way to choose just one Prince song to represent the astonishing and brilliant body of work that he produced during his lifetime - so I simply chose this one because it always makes me smile.  RIP to a musical genius whose songs were the soundtrack of my life.  Gone but will never be forgotten.  Prince was fanatical about keeping his music offline, but this is from his legendary "1999" album - so if you don't already have it yourself, somebody you know does.

Brant's April 2016 Playlist

Spring is in the air, and so is the pollen!  Some folks will be looking for a spot by the pool, but I'll probably be happy to find some Zyrtec.  I'm a little spacey from the allergy meds, but with the help of some friends managed to pull together some music for this month.  To listen on Spotify, click HERE.

1.  Figuring It Out (SWMRS) - Get your Spring Break party started with this upbeat punk-pop tune!

2.  Sour Candy (Bleached) - Delicious 80s style new wave rock

3.  Closer (Frida Amundsen) - Heard this one on Traxx radio and had to have it - it's from 2011 but love its happy mix of confidence and innocence.

4.  Still a Child (Dori Freeman) - Galax, Virginia has a great bluegrass festival every year - so I was excited to see that is where this artist resides.  She is way too young to sound this weary, but a great ballad nonetheless.

5.  Who You Lovin (Conrad Sewell) - From Appalachia to Australia, which is where Conrad Sewell calls home.  Sounds like he's got some Justin Timberlake influences, though.

6.  Show Business (A Tribe Called Quest) - 2016 continues to kill our musicians!!!  In March we lost Phife Dawg, from ATCQ.  RIP.

7.  Sugar (Wild Culture and Karmin) - "Brokenhearted" peeps team up with Austrian act for a slice of disco funk.

8.  This Girl (Kungs and Cookin' on Three Burners) - French DJ takes Cookin' on Three Burners out of the kitchen and onto the dance floor!

9.  Rolling Pin (Grant-Lee Phillips) - Latest folk-rockin' offering from California singer-songwriter

10.  Patiently Waiting (Terrace Martin) - Kendrick Lamar producer delivers some old school blues, with an assist from Uncle Chucc and the Emotions!

11.  Sweet Life (Roberto Cacciapaglia and Ann Steele) - An oldie but what a goodie!!!  My friend Josh turned me on to this.  Italian composer and pianist pairs with American model in 1979 for some glorious New Wave/disco/avant garde goodness.  Read more about their collaboration here.

12.  Take Me There (Adore Delano) - Reality TV star (American Idol, RuPaul's Drag Race) keeps the sweetness going with some sugary dance pop.

13.  Wear Me Out Loud (The I Don't Cares) - Paul Westerberg (the Replacements) pairs up with Indie rock legend Juliana Hatfield to do what they both do best - rock it out.  Loud.

14.  I Can't Go On Without You (Kaleo) - They may be from Iceland, but these guys are about as far from the Bjork sound as you can get.   Sounds like they've spent more time with Hozier than with glaciers.

15.  Kiss Me (Olly Murs) - I love this guy.  He always delivers fun, R&B-flavored pop that takes me to my happy place.

16.  Born Again Teen (Lucius) - Somewhere in that super-charged punk electronic realm that is also inhabited by Peaches and the Ting Tings!  Eric turned me on to this.

17.  I Don't Mind (Psychic Ills featuring Hope Sandoval) - Psychedelic band joins Mazzy Star singer for some dreamy shoegazing.  Thanks to my friend Zach for telling me about it!

18.  Cada Dia Es Domingo (Mexrissey) - Just in time for your Cinco De Mayo playlist - a muy caliente Mexican band cover Morrissey's classic "Every Day Is Like Sunday"!

Brant's March 2016 Playlist

I got one extra day to pull together March's playlist this year!  It was a beautiful Leap Day here in the CLT.  I went for a cruise in my friend's convertible, then came back and threw open my windows as I listened to the final draft of this month's playlist.  It skewed a little heavy on the duets and R&B tunes, but nothing wrong with that!  Hope you enjoy.  To listen on Spotify, click HERE.

1.  Am I Wrong (Anderson .Paak) - I really like this guy!  We had him on last month's playlist, but this funky groove seemed like a delicious way to start the new month.

2.  Talk to Me (Nick Brewer) - How many times has someone sampled Crystal Waters' 1991 classic "Gypsy Woman"???  According to Wikipedia, more than 15 times!!!  This is the latest tune to do so - and I love how the tempo changes back and forth.

3.  Should've Gone Home (Mans Zelmerlow) - Handsome Swede, who recently won the Eurovision Song Contest, apparently can't keep it zipped - much to his girlfriend's distress.  Bad for her, good for us if it means we get this great ballad.

4.  Wet Dream (Vanity 6) - sigh.  Vanity's death really made me sad.  I debated which song to put on this month's list, and rather than choose "Nasty Girl" or one of her solo hits, I landed on this one.  It's an album cut from the Vanity 6 album that's always been a personal fave.  RIP

5.  Entropy (Grimes feat. Bleachers) - I continue to adore all things Grimes.  Here, she collaborates with Bleachers on this song for the HBO hit show "Girls".

6.  Somethin' From Nothin' (Fairground Saints) - LA folk trio serves up some sunny harmonies vaguely reminiscent of Fleetwood Mac.

7.  Any Road (Butch Walker) - This is from the George Fest concert album, in tribute to George Harrison.  Kinda cool to hear one of my fave songwriters singing one of Harrison's last songs.

8.  Where Did She Go (the Struts) - Another repeat artist from a previous playlist. UK band gave us "Kiss This" on my October 2015 list, now they're back with this tasty garage-rock morsel.

9.  Everything It Takes (Loretta Lynn with Elvis Costello) - Loretta is back and sounding as great as ever!!!  I love how she just follows her own muse and records music that is true to her spirit.  Can't wait to hear the rest of her new album.

10.  Love Me (the 1975) - The latest from Manchester band sounds like the love child of Red Hot Chili Peppers and Duran Duran.  Where's a mosh pit when you need one???

11.  Lemon Trees (Eagulls) - More UK rock to keep the party going.  This one sounds more like early 80s Simple Minds to my ears.

12.  Weak (Wet) - Gorgeous vocals over a chill electronic beat.

13.  Skipping Stones (Gallant feat. Jhene Aiko) - Astonishing falsetto vocals that would make Prince proud.  Jhene Aiko adds just the right amount of silky restraint to balance Gallant's vocal acrobatics.

14.  Back and Forth (B.o.B.) - Bobby Ray Simmons, aka B.o.B., may think the world is flat, but as long as he's serving up great music like this - we'll just pretend it's a dance floor!

15.  Spirits (the Strumbellas) - Hand-clappin' indie rock from North of the Border (Canada).
